From a series of paintings based on a poem: Labyrinth of Grief. Each painting represented one stanza of the poem. This poem and the subsequent paintings grew out of a reoccurring dream in which the artist found herself caught up in different rooms of a labyrinth. This dream came to me over a six-year period after the death of her infant daughter in 1994.
The opening was held November 2000, in Prince George, BC. The night featured a performance by the artist and Robin Clegg, a musician who was inspired to write a series of short musical pieces inspired by the paintings. Jewelles and Robin performed with a reading of each stanza as portrayed within the individual paintings, incorporating the original music written by Robin. It was a magical and haunting evening.
