Today Canada lost a great man. I first met Jack Layton in 2003 at SFU. He took time to talk with students and parents at the campus. Over the years, I would periodically run into Jack, in Burnaby, and on Parliament Hill. He was a man full of joy and committed himself to making our country a better place. He truly listened to people and then brought their issues to parliament. My thoughts are with Olivia Chow and the Layton family.
In his final letter to Canadians, Jack continued to inspire us: ”Love is better than anger. Hope is better than fear. Optimism is better than despair. So let us be loving, hopeful and optimistic. And we’ll change the world.”
The optimism that drove him forward will continue to inspire me. Tonight I will be lighting a candle in remembrance of an incredibly inspiring man.
Rest in peace Jack Layton and thank you.
